Scotland will remain in that position for the next two years after beating Jamaica’s Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister, Kamina Johnson.
In a press statement in which he congratulated Baroness Scotland, Skerrit stated, “I want to commend the candidate from Jamaica who had a very keen contest. We recognized her as a very strong, educated and committed and resourceful Caribbean lady.”
He added, “The reality is the contest was very rigorous but we eventually triumphed and I want to thank all those who did not vote Dominica and also, to particularly thank the many countries which supported us throughout this process.”
According to the prime minister, countries in Africa, the Pacific and the Caribbean worked to ensure that Scotland was victorious.
He commended the efforts of the Minister for foreign affairs in Dominica, Dr. Kenneth Darroux, Dominica’s Acting High Commissioner in London, Ambassador Francine Baron, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and others who played “a tremendous role” in getting Baroness Scotland re-elected.
Skerrit asked all member countries, now that the election is over, to continue the work of the Commonwealth and to be that “beacon in our daily lives.”
He pointed out that Scotland has to continue her term during challenging circumstances with the increasing oil and food prices but said he looks forward to the Commonwealth playing its part in addressing a number of the key issues.
