Has The Coronavirus Allowed China to Close the Economic Gap on the U.S.?

It’s been dismissed as conspiratorial, the theory that China was involved in the development and subsequent pandemic spread of the ‘novel’ coronavirus. The virus has reportedly killed hundreds of thousands the world over, and has brought to a standstill, the economies of countries great and small, including the mighty America.

But one country that has benefited (depending on what source you read) from the worldwide crisis, is the aforementioned communist super power. Writes (Ravi Kant) of Asia Times: “At a time when the whole world is grappling with the Covid-19 pandemic, away from the media glare, China is capitalizing on the situation. It is using this moment to expand its global leadership and advertise its governance model across the world.”

An interesting choice of words by Kant; that China is doing all of this “away from the media glare.” The same media which is continuing its vowed 24/7 war against Donald Trump.

Kant continues: “The Chinese are rewriting the codes of the international world order through new strategic chokepoints. Chinese leaders have taken decisive and aggressive steps in the last few months to gain an advantage over all the strategic opportunities presented by the rest of the world, and especially the US, amid the Covid-19 crisis.”

Kant provides examples. He writes that “A month back, Beijing established two new research stations in the contested South China Sea. At the same time, China has launched a maritime law-enforcement campaign, “Blue Sea 2020”; to run from April 1 to November 30. This has increased the chances of confrontation in the region as the project will target any violation of Chinese laws in sectors such as oil exploration, marine coastal construction, and deep-sea mining.”

“In the current scenario,” continues Kant, “this can only be seen as a way to target opposing claimants to territory in the sea; and to conduct unlawful “law enforcement” operations in waters claimed by Southeast Asian states; such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.”

All this, while the rest of the world is struggling to regain its soci0-economic equilibrium.

Meanwhile, The Economist (another evidently anti-Trump, pro-Chinese news outlet); writes that “Covid-19 is speeding up China’s rise as a financial rival to America.”

The article argues that “the [coronavirus] crisis harms other countries’ trust in America’s fitness to lead. It [America] ignored early warnings and botched its initial response. China may be guilty of worse—its own missteps helped export covid-19 in the first place. Yet it managed to curb cases fast and is now broadcasting a narrative of domestic competence.”

A narrative, ably distributed by news outlets like The Economist. To return to Kant from earlier: “At a time when the whole world is grappling with the Covid-19 pandemic, away from the media glare, China is capitalizing on the situation.” There can be no doubt the significance of the role the media plays in China’s reported coronavirus advantage over the rest of the world.

China is also “dispatching medics and masks around the world, whereas America struggles even to provide for itself”; continues the Economist, a mere tributary in the river of Chinese propaganda.

The Economist article concludes that “America’s ability to guarantee global prosperity is the glue that holds the financial order together. With its legitimacy badly hit, renewed assaults on the system seem inevitable.” Written with the obvious insinuation, that the Chinese are in a prime position (thanks to the coronavirus) to pick up the pieces.
