While the stat line reads Warriors 88: 92 Celtics, this was yet another case of the Warriors beating themselves. Up 17 at one point, while the Celtics defense must be given credit for the comeback, the Warriors took them too lightly when they realised they are the much better team.
As reported on ESPN: “The Celtics trailed by as many as 17 in the first half, but even as Boston’s offense struggled mightily (30.2 percent shooting overall through two quarters), its defense gave it a chance to rally by holding the Warriors without a field goal over the final 5:25 of the half.”
Although not an important game in the grand scheme of things, this was a preview of a potential Finals matchup; the Celtics needed to prove they can run with the Warriors. The Warriors needed a wake up call and they got the message. The trophy won’t be automatically handed to them; they’ll have to earn it.
