Why The Catalonia Independence Bid Has Hitherto Failed

All political power comes from the barrel of a gun.

Mao Tse Tung

Although Mao Tse Tung was one of the greatest mass murderers in history, imposing one of the biggest fraudulent economic systems in history (Communism); his statement above is one of the fundamental truths of politics. All of this nonsense being spewed about inspiration, courage, ideals and getting the masses behind ‘the cause’; is all romantic claptrap. There isn’t a single government in place on earth, that isn’t backed by the gun; whether they are sovereign governments or proxies, it doesn’t matter. Their power rests on the power of their arsenal. Regional President of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont is learning this truth the hard way.

The Independence Bid of Catalonia

Weeks ago, when news about the proposed separation of Catalonia from Spain had just broken, worldwide public sentiment was with the Catalans. The BBC was reporting an over 90% support of the referendum from Catalans, and through their coverage, made the Spanish Government look as tyrannical and as brutish as they possibly could.

At that point, independence seemed inevitable. However, one thing was very strange. Where was the backing of the U.N., the E.U., and the U.S.? It wasn’t there. These bodies at best were lukewarm to the Catalan Separatist cause and at worst, completely opposed to it.

It began as many things do these days with President Trump; who publicly siding with the Spanish Government. Then we began finding out that the 90% support figure, initially dolled out by the BBC; might have been a slight exaggeration; as some Catalans began showing their support for one Spain.

Support for Catalonia Independence Was Not As Unanimous As Mainstream Media Reported

Many of these one Spain Catalans, were people not originally from the Catalan Region; but who had been living there for many years. These demographic intricacies of the Catalan region; though not initially reported on; became more and more of a factor as the days and weeks rolled on. And the momentum that President Carles Puigdemont had gathered initially, was rapidly slipping away.

Ultimately, none of that mattered. Spain will activate its so called “trigger” option on Saturday; taking over autonomy from the Catalan Government. And why is the Spanish Government able to do such a thing in this age of “freedom and democracy”? Because Spain has the guns and Catalonia does not.

That will ultimately be President Carles Puigdemont’s undoing in this matter. It is unclear whether he was promised military support from N.A.T.O or the U.N. or the U.S. or the E.U. member states; but that has so far been wanting; the romantic ideals of “freedom and democracy” not sufficient to convince these powers that be; that Catalonia is better off being separate from Spain.

The referendum, as all referenda ultimately are, has so far been an exercise in futility. Supporters of Brexit will soon find out this hard truth, much to their chagrin. It is about time people wake up to the untrue propaganda that the power ultimately lies with the people. The power ultimately lies with God and with those to whom He allows power. That power has always been secured “from the barrel of a gun”.
